Dominic Barter develops social technologies to promote dialogue and partnership. In the mid-1990s, in Rio de Janeiro’s gang controlled favela shantytowns, he co-developed Círculos Restaurativos (Restorative Circles), a community-based and -owned practice for dynamic engagement with conflict. As lead trainer for the Brazilian Ministry of Justice's award-winning pilot projects in Restorative Justice he adapted the process for use in courts, schools, prisons, with police and social services. He supports its application in a further 27 countries, most recently South Korea, Senegal and France. In recent years he has supervised the mediation program for the Rio ‘Police Pacification Units’ and served as invited professor at the Standing Group for Consensual Methods of Conflict Resolution, at the High Court of Rio. In 2013-14 Dominic developed and directed the Dialogue Restoration project for the State Education Department. As a long time student and colleague of Dr. Marshall Rosenberg Dominic served as president of the Board of Directors for the international Center for Nonviolent Communication. He is a member of the International Advisory Board of the jornal ‘Restorative Justice’. Presently he is collaborating in the development of relational intelligence in schools as a founding member of Arca Educação.
